GROUNDWOOD papers,
such as newsprint, are made from mechanically ground wood pulp that contains
impurities (i.e., everything that nature puts into the tree).
FREE
SHEET papers are made from pulp that is "cooked" and chemically treated
to leave them free of impurities.
TEXT
papers are free sheet papers that come in a wide variety of colors and
surface patterns. There are many, many kinds, and all of them are created
to appeal to graphic designers who need special papers to create distinctive
"looks" for brochures, presentation folders, and other fancy printed pieces.
The term "text" derives from "texture"--it has nothing to do with copy
"text" per se.
UNCOATED
BOOK papers are the general- purpose, workhorse papers of everyday printing--they're
widely used in publishing and direct-mail advertising. They can be rough-surfaced
or smooth- surfaced. They come in a variety of colors (though not in as
many colors as text papers). The terms "uncoated book" and "offset" are
used interchangeably to denote this category of papers.
