The market for e-book titles and reading devices is developing much more slowly than first predicted. Why? The novelty has worn off: "It's like vinyl siding. People rarely like simulations as much as they like the real thing." The age demographics are not favorable: those who buy the most books are older readers who prefer ink on paper to electronic gizmos. To many people, e-book reading devices are expensive "toys." People still cling to the notion that content on the Internet should be "free." There are too many competing solutions; content and devices are not interoperable; "open" standards are needed.
