ELECTRONIC BOOKS (I)

• An electronic book or "e-book" is:
1. an electronic version of a book (i.e., data), or
2. an electronic reading device

• An "e-book reader" is the software needed to read an e-book title on a reading device

• The most widely used e-book reader applications are Microsoft Reader, Adobe e-Book Reader, and Gemstar eBook Reader

• e-book titles, readers, and devices do not all work together. Some e-books require "dedicated" reading software and reading devices.

• Most e-books are available in one or more of the following formats:
1. HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), readable with browsers
2. PDF (Portable Document Format), readable with Adobe e-Book Reader
3. PML ("Peanut Markup Language"), for hand-held devices running the Palm OS
4. XML (Extensible Markup Language), for the Microsoft and Gemstar readers
